What Is the Largest Grant Every Given To an Individual?
As of my last knowledge update in September 2021, one of the largest grants ever given to an individual is the MacArthur Fellowship, often referred to as the “Genius Grant.” The MacArthur Fellowship is awarded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation and is known for its significant financial support and recognition of individuals who have shown exceptional creativity and talent in their respective fields.
Each MacArthur Fellowship typically includes a “no-strings-attached” grant, often referred to as an “unrestricted” or “genius” grant, which is awarded to the recipient. These grants are substantial, usually in the range of hundreds of thousands of dollars, and are intended to provide individuals with the financial freedom to pursue their creative or intellectual work without specific project or spending requirements.
The MacArthur Foundation selects MacArthur Fellows through a confidential, nomination-based process, and the recipients come from various fields, including the arts, sciences, humanities, social sciences, and more. The selection process is highly competitive, and recipients are chosen for their outstanding contributions and the potential for further impactful work.
It’s worth noting that while the MacArthur Fellowship is one of the most well-known and generous grants awarded to individuals, other philanthropic organizations, foundations, and government agencies also provide substantial grants to support the work of exceptional individuals in various fields.
